Material Trials

Change one material variable at a time.

The aim is not to rank brands but to understand what a tool or surface contributes to the mark.

Nib flexibility trial

Use the same stroke sequence with two nibs and record how pressure, recovery and maximum width differ.

Paper drag trial

Compare smooth and more absorbent surfaces while keeping nib and ink constant. Note feathering, catching and hairline consistency.

Ink-flow trial

Record how long a dip remains usable, where pooling begins and whether consistency changes over the session.

Controlled practice log

Write down the material combination, visible symptom and one variable changed. Avoid changing nib, paper and ink at the same time.
